Igniting the conversation on CCAM at the 30th ITS World Congress

The ITS World Congress 2024, held from 16 to 20 September at the Dubai World Trade Centre, brought together global leaders in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to discuss cutting-edge advancements in mobility solutions. The congress, organised by IN2CCAM partner ERTICO and hosted by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) was a pivotal showcase of innovative approaches to smart mobility. With CCAM at the core of the discussions, the IN2CCAM project highlighted its role in driving interoperability and societal impact within the rapidly evolving mobility landscape.

Showcasing IN2CCAM’s vision at the ERTICO Stand

IN2CCAM project coordinator Maria Pia Fanti (POLIBA) introduced the project’s mission at the ERTICO Stand on Wednesday, 18 September. Fanti provided a detailed overview of the project’s mission and progress, emphasizing how IN2CCAM is advancing interoperability across operational, physical, and digital infrastructures. By integrating these elements, IN2CCAM seeks to create a more connected and automated transportation network to improve safety, enhance efficiency, and drive sustainable mobility solutions. At the heart of IN2CCAM’s mission is fostering collaboration across sectors and geographies to develop new business models that will make CCAM scalable and practical for real-world application. The project is also leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins, and V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication to test and refine vehicle performance in real-life environments. These efforts are ultimately aimed at optimizing traffic management to benefit both people and goods, ensuring that transport systems are not only smarter but also more inclusive and environmentally friendly.

Fanti also introduced the project’s Living Lab use cases, which are being tested in diverse real-world environments or assessed through advanced simulations. These use cases demonstrate how IN2CCAM is utilizing advanced technological solutions to solve key mobility challenges, such as improving traffic flow, reducing emissions, and enhancing safety. By showcasing these applications at a global forum, IN2CCAM invited international collaboration to help accelerate its objectives and bring about more inclusive, sustainable, and safe transportation systems worldwide.

Engaging in high-level discussions: Session 91

In addition to the presentation at the ERTICO Stand, IN2CCAM project partners Maria Pia Fanti, Coen Bresser (ERTICO), and Andre Perpey (NeoGLS) participated in Session 91 on Friday. This session focused on “Opportunities and methodologies for integrating CCAM in traffic management”, with a particular emphasis on safety, technology, and innovation. As part of a panel of industry experts, the IN2CCAM representatives contributed insights into the project’s approach to improving safety and reducing road accidents, a critical goal of CCAM.

The session underscored the importance of collaboration between stakeholders—ranging from policymakers and industry leaders to researchers and technologists—to address the technical and societal challenges associated with connected and automated mobility. The IN2CCAM team highlighted their ongoing work to improve physical and digital infrastructure, and how AI and communication technologies are being harnessed to not only enhance vehicle performance but also contribute to more efficient traffic management.

The ITS World Congress 2024 provided a global stage for the IN2CCAM project to demonstrate its leadership in the field of CCAM. Through its presentations and participation in high-level discussions, the project showcased how it is advancing the critical elements needed to make connected and automated mobility a reality.
